Potomac Baptist Church (PBC) is a Christ-centered Southern Baptist (SBCV) church situated in an affluent, professional, diverse, and family-dense neighborhood in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In anticipation of the upcoming retirement of our lead pastor (after faithfully serving for 19 years), PBC is prayerfully seeking a senior pastor to teach, disciple, lead and shepherd our church.
Our mission is to nurture and grow a biblically-based, spiritually healthy, God-centered community of believers equipped to engage and evangelize people in our world for Christ. PBC is a multi-generational congregation with approximately 150 people in attendance at our weekly worship service. PBC serves the broader community by hosting God-honoring organizations that also meet in the church building (e.g. a Christian school and a Spanish-speaking church plant).
Position Overview
PBC is seeking an evangelical pastor who is a faithful and godly man of honorable character with strong leadership skills. The senior pastor must fulfill the biblical qualifications and roles of a church leader as defined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 2 Timothy 4:2, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.
As a healthy church poised for growth, PBC recognizes that we must be energized to address the spiritual and physical needs of the lost in our densely populated surroundings. We desire a pastor who will engage us around a clear vision to help us break out of our comfort zone and share the gospel with our community. Previous pastoral experience is required and a seminary degree is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Spiritual Leadership: Be a leader of strategic planning, a visionary for the growth and direction of the church, set and accomplish goals, and hold the church accountable for results. As a member of the Elder Board, be willing and able to lead alongside others equal in position but different in function.
- Preaching and Teaching: Provide spiritual guidance, ensuring the congregation remains grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Deliver inspiring and impactful sermons that exposit and teach the Word of God effectively.
- Pastoral Care: Alongside the elders and deacons, minister to the needs of others by providing emotional, physical, and spiritual support (e.g. offer counseling, provide referrals for individual needs, administer pastoral rites, and provide emergency pastoral care).
- Ministry Oversight: Lead and manage the church staff (office manager, youth pastor, and children’s director). Oversee leadership of various church ministries (e.g. worship team, youth, children, adult education, outreach, and missions).
